This may not be your particular problem, but I have a utility that copies files in my DX4WIN "save" directory over the network every time a file changes. If I do a DX4WIN update, DX4WIN shuts down and restarts. During that time, the network copy utility can take ownership of the file, preventing DX4WIN from accessing it. If DX4WIN reports an error on startup, I click "Cancel" and try again, and it usually works. Again, this may not be your particular problem.
