While I am using a multiport card with XP instead of 2000 I doubt there is
any significant difference re multiport.  What I found is that all my add in
cards used IRQ 9, my sound card, my 4 port card and my network card.  There
is no problem with sharing of IRQ's with properly designed PCI cards.

Your problem could be the Lava card.  Have you tested it using Hyperterminal
to a TNC to be sure that much works..trying all ports.
