Peter, I have and HP Office Jet Pro 7580 (I know that you said that you didn't want one of these.) I have been using mine to print QSL cards and envelopes for several months and it works just fine. I don't seem to have the problem of the U-shaped paper path that you mention. It is possible that the cards that you are using are pretty thick and that is causing the bent cards. My QSL cards are pretty light weight so they don't bend. Occasionally, I have one go through the printer crooked but I figured that was a problem they all had.
I have even sent several clasp envelopes through mine with no adverse effects. Just a thought. I had an HP-6L that was really great (until I put a clasp envelope through it one day -- sigh). It had a top-loading straight paper path, but of course that style is no longer available and nobody stocks parts for it or can fix it for under the cost of three new lasers. I've tried 6 different HP and Samsung models so far and all are regular small-office style printers that can only print with a U-shaped paper path - which destroys or severely curves cards. Ideally I'm looking for a networkable printer because I want to place it nowhere neither either PC in my shack, but that's secondary to a straight paper path. I won't have access to the back of the printer (it's in a very tight corner). I'm NOT interested in any inkjet of any kind, regardless of features or price. Any suggestions?
