Wes, N7WS, my problem is solved! Thanks for your help. And thanks too to Dave, N8DC, and to Henk, PA5KT, for their ideas.
I did as you suggested and worked my way down to C:\Program Files\Scientific Solutions\DXbase 2005\Virgindb\ where I found a new empty .mdb file, named Dxb2005.mdb, that I copied and pasted into C:\users\(my name)\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Scientific Solutions\DXbase 2005\ where I also found the latest working versions of two other .mdb logs. Then I renamed this Dxb2005.mdb file to the callsign I wanted, and to my great relief found that it worked! But I dug deeper still, bothered by the fact that I couldn't create this new log file as explained by the help information. I saved my .mdb files and uninstalled DXbase 2005, then reinstalled it. Now I can create new log files very easily, so I had a damaged installation causing the trouble! So on to the next computer challenge! Thanks very much for showing me the way on this one!!
