*Too* feature rich? Ummmm...no. There are dozens of apps that do simple logging and rig control (AC Log is very good, simple and cheap) but don't offer the powerful and robust feature set that DX Base and others have.
If you compare DX Base to its current crop of competitors (CommCat, DX Lab Suite in particular) you'll find it's missing some of the most in-demand features on the market at present. A bandmap, visual spot mapping, custom e-mail or SMS alerting, multi-monitor support, modules for all the current soundcard modes, spot filtering with a very high level of granularity and on and on. In my opinion (humble or otherwise) it needs a thorough updating for Vista/7 and the underlying grid structure and other basic elements need to be revamped for the modern era, an integrated MMTTY interface--and a little visual polish never hurt either. That said, DX Base is probably the absolute *best* of its kind for QSO management, reports and analysis. With List&Label and Crystal Reports modules integrated you can slice-and-dice your QSO data every which way from Sunday, customize reports, have vast flexibility in label and envelope printing and much more. I've never seen another product on the market that can do all of these things (and do them WELL) and believe me, I've looked far and wide. I'd personally pay $250 or even more for a modern logger with everything I want and need, and that ALSO has an intuitive and simple interface. Jack got this correctly to a very high degree, whereas many other authors haven't; they implement toys but do it in an annoyingly bloated way. DX Base gives you phenomenal power but in a way that doesn't boggle the mind. It's a high-end product and it aims to satisfy high-end users with tens (or hundreds) of thousands of QSOs and who actively paper-chase, all the while providing functionality for more basic users as well and giving them room to grow. It is my sincerest hope that DX Base continues under new leadership and gets the facelift it so desperately needs to put it back at the very top of the market. ----------------------------------- Regards, Peter, W2IRT -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Greg Engle Sent: Tuesday, August 04, 2009 1:12 PM To: [email protected]; 'DXBase Reflector' Subject: Re: [Dxbase] a circle of regret? [pjd] <snip> IMHO the software became too feature rich. I know you can configure to your liking but all I wanted was a LOG and Radio Control. So now I wait like the others to see what shakes out and if I want to stay with this product. It's all on me. ______________________________________________________________ Dxbase mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dxbase Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[email protected] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
