Hi Jim The process has to be both manual as well as (hopefully) automatic because there are many people who do not stay connected to the internet with their shack computer. Plus, the user should have the ability to say yes or no on automatic updates even if they are not connected unless told in advance what will be downloaded.
In my DXCluster progrram for OS X (as you know since you are a user), it automatically downloads the cty.dat file plus the current list of all dxclusters from AD1Cs site as well as the current LoTW callsigns then establishes the database so you are getting the latest info. I am thinking of 3 options for the user at the moment: 1. Unrestricted permission to update reference files 2. A pop-up window informing the user that there are new files and gives guidance on how to start the auto-update process 3. A way to upload the raw files into the reference database (assuming you have downloaded them from somewhere else like my website, Joe's, etc.) I guess there is the 4th option and that is letting the user handle it by himself also. 73 Neal Campbell Abroham Neal Software www.dxbase.com www.abrohamnealsoftware.com www.sdrsystems.com (540) 242 0911 Amateur Radio: K3NC Blog: http://www.abrohamnealsoftware.com/blog/ DXBase bug reports: email to [email protected] Abroham Neal forums: http:/www.abrohamnealsoftware.com/community/ DX Cluster: dxc.k3nc.com port 23 On Fri, Oct 16, 2009 at 10:21 AM, Jim WA9YSD <[email protected]> wrote: > Joe brought up and interesting point as stated below. > > Neal you had touch on the Auto update on prefix changes. > > The below statement I do not fully understand why or how it works. > However it is real hard to manually updated the prefixes, unless you > have been doing it for some time. > > Some one else stated they did all their own updates manually > and preferred it that way. > > The logging program that I am using now is a manual update.
