Mike, I think someone else actually gave you to solution to the host issue. But in case you didn't see it, here ya go:
There is a host file placed in your DXbase folder. This is done as a backup in case something during the installation process fails and doesn't let the software install the host file into the necessary Windows folder. The ".....bak " file you mention is not the host file that is being used... the file you refer to is a .bak ( backup ) file and doesn't relate to the issue you mention.
