As far as I know, mod_gzip (if properly configured) checks if a ".gz
version" off the requested file exists, and sends it instead.

Always, because it needs to verify that your browser can handle gzipped
content, by checking some HTTP headers (accept-encoding actually)

I've looked for it a few month ago, and nothing really interesting came out :-(
