Hi,
I don't know if it's any use in your case, but what I use a lot for allignment are <pre></pre> tags.
This allows line feeds, and tabs to be shown in HTML, you don't need <br> anymore,
Here is a small example:
 
Item one		Item two		Item three		Item four
content1		content2		content3		content4
and			it			just			keeps
on			going			on			.
The HTML source for that looks like this:
 
<PRE>
Item one  Item two  Item three  Item four
content1  content2  content3  content4
and  it  just  keeps
on  going  on  .
</PRE>
