Why do you think that the state of the world is that there is a trade 
off between freedom and wealth?    There is little freedom and there is
comparative wealth but that does not mean that there is an either/or
connection between the two.

No, that is what I said.  You said the opposite: "the average Joe has a 
choice between ... giv[ing] up his freedom or wealth".

What I don't agree with is the idea that such a choice is necessary,

Thanks for the suggestion.  The reason I have been doing so is that that
seems to be the only way to reply to the list address on the to line.
