wow, I didn't know that Americans were *that* clever!

for an American to be able to invent electricity before the country itself 
had been invented, hey, that's really an achievement to be proud of ...

William Gilbert (1540-1603), physican to Elizabeth I of England, was busy 
publishing the first scientific study of electricity while the English were 
still colonising Virginia, 150 years before Benjamin Franklin decided to 
play around with lightning and "invent" electricity...

come to think of it, didn't a German, Konrad Zuse, invent the first binary 
computer, the Z1, in Berlin in 1936...
