I agree that there have to be more merchants in order for the egold economy to grow. The hierarchy is: E-gold - exchangers - merchants - clients. Email readers and various games are a weak base for an economy because they produce no value whatsoever. Merchants are the only ones that DO!
I believe that E-gold directories think this (= a growing system) can be achieved because it's very simple to setup a manual egold merchant account: just your basic URL. I don't think it's that easy because there is another factor in the equation: you must have people to buy stuff. THEY must be attracted somehow, the hard way, since they GIVE the money. So, you want to make it as easier as possible for them to GET the egold. For these people, those who have the highest number of accounts, it shouldn't matter it the out-exchange fee is high, but it does matter if the in-exchange fee is. For example, I paid a 10% (because of the minimum required) fee for my unique egold exchange... plus the other transfer fee (Western Union). All I needed was 70 USD worth of egold and ended up paying 100 USD (99). Hardly appealing isn't it? And I did it only because I was (kind of) forced... there goes 100 to Nirvana... It's not a matter of not wanting to keep people's egold into the system if they don't want. Hey, if they don't want, they don't get the egold in the first place. It all comes down to the way one looks at the system: do you think it's just a tranfer service or a pool of money? If it's a pool of money, then you already have the ever increasing *added value* right in your hand. Hm... that reminds me of other things that grow in ones hand ;) ... the point being: you have to know what to do with *it* (the system) in order to grow it beyond expectations. (I am hot already! It must be the glow.. from so much gold ;) ) P.S. If there are so many egold merchants, the E-gold directory must transform itself into a real "White Pages". Otherwise, well, there is no "added value" (without being dispersed over the Net) to the system and the E-gold is just a transfer service with lower growth than it would have with the added value.
