--------------------------
Though a few merchants who accept e-gold payments are listed on the
website, I don't see much future for the system since it's difficult
to
get money into the system.
--------------------------

I do not understand this (extremely common) statement. He found the list
of merchants. which means he found the list of market makers/exchange
providers. Listed there are business all over the world, and who accept
whatever (valid) payment method you have to offer. The consensus appears
to be that this "difficulty in getting money into the system" is the
exchange, either way, surcharge. I did a quick little look around and
realised what the problem might be - honesty.

Here was my little experiment:
e-gold is a currency (AUG) - correct?
The Euro is a currency (EUR) - correct?

I want to obtain 1000 EUR in euro notes, paid for with US dollars.

oanda.com says that 1 Euro = 1.1345 USD

I checked a few currency exchange sites, all of whom said that there
was no commission or fee charged.

ordercurrency.com
1000 Euro = 1294.13 USD
14% exchange surcharge

www.foreign-currency.com
1000 Euro = 1241.84 USD
9.5% exchange surcharge

travelex.com
1000 Euro = 1222.72 USD
7.8% exchange surcharge

FX Delivery (service of travelex.com on oanda.com)
1000 Euro = 1213.60 USD
7% exchange surcharge

Now, I want to obtain 100 AUG, paid for with US dollars.

prices.e-gold.com says 1 AUG = 11.076 USD
kitco.com says london fix of 1 gram of gold = 11.04 USD

A&B Gold Commerce charges a 5% fee

Bishop's Gold charges a 6% fee

Gold Age charges a 2-10% fee depending on method & membership

It appears to be easier to get into e-gold than it does to get into the
Euro, so the problem must be honesty. People want to be told that they
are getting something for free, when their money is being silently taken
hand over fist. That sounds remarkably like the prevailing model of government,
 in fact.
