I am a newby at e1000 building so please bear with me... I recently
downloaded, built and installed the e1000 8.0.6 version on my i386 fc4
machine. When the dust cleared here's how things looked:

[r...@dd42 ~]# ethtool -i eth0
driver: e1000
version: 8.0.6-NAPI
firmware-version: N/A
bus-info: 0000:01:01.0

[r...@dd42 ~]# ls -l /lib/modules/2.6.17-1.2142_FC4smp/kernel/drivers/net/e1000
total 4144
-rw-r--r-- 2 root root 2110478 Mar 5 16:35 e1000.ko
-rw-r--r-- 2 root root 2110478 Mar 5 16:35 e1000.ko.new

[r...@dd42 ~]# lsmod | grep e1000
e1000 174848 0

What concerned me and the reason for this inquiry is that the older
e1000 version had a MUCH smaller e1000.ko file, leading me to wonder
if I had done something wrong here.

[r...@dd43 ~]# ethtool -i eth0
driver: e1000
version: 7.0.33-k2-NAPI
firmware-version: N/A
bus-info: 0000:01:01.0

[r...@dd43 ~]# ls -l /lib/modules/2.6.17-1.2142_FC4smp/kernel/drivers/net/e1000
total 148
-rwxr--r-- 1 root root 140204 Jul 11 2006 e1000.ko

[r...@dd43 ~]# lsmod | grep e1000
e1000 118073 0

I do see that the module sizes as shown by lsmod are not far apart. Is
the k2 in the old driver name as shown by ethtool perhaps indicative
of some kind of build option?

Any thoughts would be welcome.

Fwiw the new e1000 driver does seem to be working...

Chris
