Is the old driver from a distribution provided kernel (looks like maybe
an Fedora 4 install)? Maybe the FC supplied kernel module has debugging
info stripped?

Looking on my test system, when I rebuild a distro supplied kernel
source, the same driver is larger on disk than it was as installed from
rpm. It looks a lot like your numbers.

I'd have to look at a kernel rpm spec file from your distribution to be
sure, but I'm guessing it processing on the binaries to remove debugging
symbols and cut down the package size. 'file' still reports both as
being unstriped, but they may be doing something more specific to make
sure that needed information isn't removed.

Just a guess, I'd say your driver is fine to use.
