It's not clear to me when one uses the e1000 driver vs. the e1000e one. I had a machine with PICe Ethernet NICs and it looked like it required the e1000e driver. I had hoped to use the same e1000e driver for another system with with a PCI NIC and a PCI-X NIC and it didn't seem to select that driver for those NICs, even when I specifically set via modprobe.conf for that e1000e driver to be used.
Which e1000* drivers are to be used in which case? Thanks in advance.
