I am playing with newest versions (e1000 - 8.0.6 and e1000e -
0.5.11.2) that I could find. Kernel is 2.6.17 on fc4
(2.6.17-1.2142_FC4smp).

I guess what you're saying is e1000 for PCI/PCI-X and e1000e for PCIe.
I thought taht might be the case.
