This bug has lots of reasons for it including configuration. So if the latest
driver is working for you then it's fine. Just because the bug is open doesn't
mean all user will see it. It can depend on traffic type, configuration,
traffic load, etc. So if it's not happening for you with the new driver you
should be using the new driver.
Thanks.

John

Subject: Re: [E1000-devel] Query regarding igb driver
Hi John,
Sorry to trouble you again. I was facing the below problem which was reported
in sourceforge.
http://sourceforge.net/p/e1000/bugs/349/
I also get the similar message as reported in the bug.
igb 0000:01:00.0: Detected Tx Unit Hang
Can you please tell me if this bug is fixed in the latest version of igb driver
4.1.2 as I see the status of the bug is still Open. But somehow I am not seeing
ethernet driver failing in the newer version of the driver.
Can you please clarify the above?
Thanks for your help in advance.
Thanks,
Nandakumar Raghavan

No you can't do that. The Sourceforge/Intel download driver has a kernel
compatibility module which resolves the differences in the kernel so that the
driver compiles. So you if you need to update the driver on an older kernel
you should be using the latest available for download from Intel or our
Sourceforge site, e1000.sf.net<http://e1000.sf.net>.

Subject: RE: [E1000-devel] Query regarding igb driver
Hi John,
Thanks for your quick reply.
Just one more query - Is it possible to use the igb driver from the upstream
kernel without upgrading the kernel? I faced some issues when I tried compiling
the driver present in the latest kernel on my running kernel which is older
(3.0.x). But the driver downloaded from Intel/Sourceforge compiles successfully
without any issues and I was able to load the driver.
Thanks,

The Sourceforge/Intel download version is very close to what is in the upstream
kernel today. If you are using an older kernel the Sourceforge/Intel download
driver then was very close to what was in the upstream kernel then. The
drivers are always improving and changing both for bug fixes and adding new HW
support. Using the latest driver is always a good idea if you run into a
problem.
