We only started supporting compiling on Ubuntu in 14.04.1 and I can't remember which version of the driver was current at the time. In any case, I'm not sure why you're using 3.22.3 instead of the latest, which is 4.3.13.
There's also not much reason to update the driver unless your hardware requires it, and if you have hardware that new you probably can't get away with using a stock LTS Ubuntu. You'll need to use the latest.
