To be clear here, compile issues were not fixed until Canonical put in the version number in to the Ubuntu releases which was either 15.04 or 15.10. Before that we were not able to programmatically determine what kernel the driver was being compiled for and so we were not able to fix the compile issues.
As Todd said though if you are going to update the driver you should move to the latest version. Thanks.
