I tried to follow the advices you gave (putting the name of the machine
as an alias of localhost), without result (the problem persists).

By the way, I don't believe that the problem is related to X Although I
did'nt try to work in console mode to check wether it happens... but,
when the problem arise, I tried to stop X, without seeing any
improvement while working in console mode.

Two remarks :

- the problem never happened before september 2004 (I use the driver
since february 2004, with 2.4 and 2.6 kernel).
- the problem only happen when there is some trafic on the Ethernet
interface. But it is not related to NAT or firewall (it still happens
when iptables are disabled).

Two new facts :

- pppoa is not the only process to be affected by the problem : it
appeared twice while a large file transfer was running (one through ssh,
and another through bittorrent). In both cases, the file transfer
program used more CPU than pppoa. So, the problem is probably not in
pppoa itself.
- the traffic on ppp0 is not blocked : an ethereal capture show some
packets received or transmitted.

By the way, I tend to believe that the problem may not be due to the
eagle driver (or pppoa). Traces obtained through SysReq while the
system is "blocked" suggests that the system spend much time in the
ethernet driver (rtl 8139), and that pppoa is blocked in a select system
call (which may be related to the Ethernet driver). So, I have to
investigate this point.

NB : I have lost some answers to my previous messages. This could be
due to the spam prevention used at Imag (greylists). Anyway, I should
use my personnal email adress (laposte.net) while posting to this list.
I am answering to my first message, which may cause somme mess in the
references of the thread, I am sorry about that.
