There's no need to argue about scrollpanes or re-organizing the UI. As far
as I can tell, the problem with the three windows I originally mentioned is
that there are controls with improperly-set minimum sizes. All that needs to
be done is to reduce the minimum size (the preferred size can be kept, so it
will look fine on bigger screens).

So I think that it's a UI bug issue, not a UI design issue.

[And I realize that 800x600 is very small. But upgrading my screen means
getting a new notebook (paid for out of my own pocket), and the notebook I
want isn't going to be supported by IDEA for a while. And with IDEA's "show
only one class at a time" UI design, and my XP-inspired "keep methods short"
code design, the small screen isn't as bad as one might think, since I can
usually fit the whole method on my little screen. (I'm not saying I don't
want a bigger screen, just that a small one isn't killing me.)]
