I have not analysed exactly under what situations it slows down, but my gut
feel is that rather than simply when editing a large file, it is more to do
with the size of the project (by which I mean the number of java files below
the project source directory.)

I get this impression because I have found it really slows when adding a new
class to an existing large project. But found it okay (although still nowhere
near as fast the last production release) when starting a new project.

Having said all this, I would expect it to be slower since it is doing so
much more source code checking. Maybe a greater level of control over what
checks the error checking performs would be useful. People with lower spec'ed
machines could then crank it back until they get acceptible performance.
