Aha, so that's the original purpose of "exclude". I didn't know that,
and it's not exactly obvious (despite the name). Pretty cool though :-)

Until now, I have exclusively used it to '"mark" occurences that have
been "processed" in any sense' as you described it nicely. It works
well for me, although I always thought the name could be changed from
"exclude/include" to "mark/unmark" or something. The name makes sense
now, only for refactoring preview though. Maybe it should be renamed
for all the other searches?
