I typically am used to the windows world where escape is "close window". 

I am also a vi user (so I periodically hit escape out of habit).

The basic point is that escape is a commonly used key for other applications.  It 
should be 
used in functions that are common.  Commenting out code is not a commonly used 
function 
(as opposed to something like find-usages, or goto declaration, or compile).
