Setting the panes to "auto hide" could do the trick. I use this, because I only
need one pane at a time, and most of the time I only do a single operation in
it. If I need (as an example) to open multiple files at once, I set the pane to
"auto hide off", open all, and set it back...
Maybe you can use this feature...
