Remember though that the Mac task bar does that magnification effect on roll over. In addition it is very well done, very smooth not to surprise the user. To be very effective your idea would have to do the same: gradually enlarge the tabs as you move over them. You could still have the current tab and adjacent ones enlarged all the time but the roll over effect is what makes it best. I do not have to wait for a tool tip to come up. Which is why Mac os is a little more advanced than Windows in that respect (I only work on Win BTW) even though the Groups in XP does make it better when you have multiple files of the same type. However I am not sure I would group the same way in IDEA though. Java, XML, properties or some naming patterns? No I do not think so.
