I've noticed this too, but (for me at least) it doesn't appear to be limited
to hitting backspace.  Often i'll do a search for a term I want to change,
and, once it's highlighted, i start typing in my new term but it just gets
appended to the end of the found term.  I find this very non-intuitive and
unlike any editor I've ever used.  I'd love to see this fixed.
