I'd
like to see it changed, as well. However, since I don't use the "undocked"
panes, it will sound a bit myopic.
Why
not use a pop-up dialog instead of an undocked pane?
The
metaphor I try to reconcile this with is the one used in the MS VB studio.
Granted, they have "floating" panels/toolbars, but when I "dock" something I
expect it to stay put.
I'd
prefer to see (or be able to configure the app such that) every one of the view
tabs on a side share the same area (size, placement). I'd suggest
something akin to the CardPanel for that: http://java.sun.com/products/jfc/tsc/articles/cardpanel/index.html
If I hide the panel, only THEN will the editor widen up to take the available
real estate. Otherwise, if I switch from Source to ClassPath to Project,
only the contents of the panel will change and no visible juggling will
occur. (The same goes for the bottom and right side views, although I hide
these when I'm done with them.)
This
is only my $0.01 -- I hope it is not too confusing. I am lucky to run at
1600x1200 res so I know that others will not want the panes to always be
docked.
