It works in a way similar to the way how "Find Usages" work. Once you invoke
"Find Usages" for a symbol, it adds a tab with found usages into the "Find"
window. If you don't close the tab with usages, it will be automatically
replaced with the new one when performing "Find Usages" for the next time.
You may prevent this behaviour (and so preserve the tab with usages) by
using either "Lock Tab" in the tab's popup menu or "Open in new tab"
checkbox in the dialog.
The Hierarchy window works in a similar way. It may contain a number of tabs
with hierarchies of different classes. When there is no hieararchies in the
window, it's disabled. Ctrl-H (Browse Type Hierarchy) opens the hiearchy for
the current class (you may use it either from the editor or from any of the
views). If you don't close the tab with hiearchy, it will be automatically
replaced when openning a new hiearchy, unless you invoke "Lock Tab" on the
tab.
