We use an automatic style tool as a check-in trigger to solve this problem.
We do this, not so developers can "easily" read each other's code. I personally am somewhat skeptical that this is a valid reason. We do this because we need to be able to diff from version to version of the file, and different tools have different automatic formatting options, and we found they kept creeping into the baseline.
