I don't think so. If all these easyconfigs are just old ones with a
newer toolchain version, then people can better use --try-toolchain.

No, but the easybuild format v2 should handle this. There we can
specify ranges for versions. I think instead of trying to process this
huge PR, it would be better to redirect our efforts to ECv2.
