Thanks for your help and the example file and thanks too to AhmedPanel I had already followed the instructions for getting ebox-desktop to work and had rather hoped that would be enough! One interesting thing I found by using slapcat (did not know about that, thanks) was that most of my users still have their login shell set to /bin/false which was the default setting in the config file, only one has the up to date setting of /bin/bash. I have run into another unexpected problem, which I have to solve before I can try out your suggestions - since upgrading my machine to karmic I can no longer run the virtual machines I have been using to test for windows and linux authentication! Serves me right for fixing something that was not broken! Peter
