Thanks for the reply.

the problem was sorted in a really odd way. It turned out our ISP had changed DNS servers from OpenDNS to others. Internet still worked etc. After change of DNS address on the Ebox interface then smb.conf ldap.conf etc were rewritten and then all worked...

If anyone has a theory of why/how feel welcome to offer it, I dont understand it.

I had trouble with the firewall on Kubuntu blocking access to samba shares on a fiddled with karmic install but 8.04 installs seemed ok when I have had odd problems on a ebox 1.3 server I sometimes find it blocks all access to all samaba shares to all computer. turning the server off opens up the other shares so maybe a wins server issue. Once the server is back running properly all seems to return to normal.

So, I would look at your firewall - disable it totally just to see if it cures it and then try to put it back with access to samba (if you want a firewall on your network)

Not sure about how to investigate wins server problems, sorry

Have you tried smbnetfs to mount your shares on Kubuntu? this may get you round the problem and it lets openoffice handle files properly which I found it would not if using normal file manager shares.

I run an Ebox 1.0 server since quite some time. It is used as a PDC in a
network with mixed Windows and Kubuntu clients.

It is not used for gateway, dns or dhcp services, basically just for
user authentication and filesharing. It has been working well with minor
headaches on the linux clients.

Since some time last year, unknown exactly why, I have a problem with
the shares on the Kubuntu clients. On the Windows clients they show up
and behave as expected. But on the Kubuntu clients they no longer show
up in any kind of network/smb browsing. If I use Smb4K that I use
elsewhere, both on another ebox net and on windows networks, I can see
the network and the computers including the Ebox server. But I can see
no shares any longer (this used to work).

If I from Konqueror filemanager use address smb://192.168.17.3/ I see
all shares but if I type smb://eboxscc (the server name) nothing comes up.

If I from a terminal type "smbclient -L eboxscc" I get "connection to
eboxscc failed (error NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL) but if I type "smbclient
-L 192.168.17.3" I get the expected output.

I use clients with both Kubuntu Hardy 8.04 KDE 3.5.10 and Kubunty Karmic
9.10 KDE 4.3.4, same result.

Any ideas what might be wrong anyone?

Kind regards,
Sinclair
