the problem was sorted in a really odd way. It turned out our ISP had
changed DNS servers from OpenDNS to others. Internet still worked etc.
After change of DNS address on the Ebox interface then smb.conf
ldap.conf etc were rewritten and then all worked...
If anyone has a theory of why/how feel welcome to offer it, I dont
understand it.

Have you tried smbnetfs to mount your shares on Kubuntu? this may get you
round the problem and it lets openoffice handle files properly which I found it
would not if using normal file manager shares.

eboxscc failed (error NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL) but if I type "smbclient
-L 192.168.17.3" I get the expected output.
I use clients with both Kubuntu Hardy 8.04 KDE 3.5.10 and Kubunty Karmic
9.10 KDE 4.3.4, same result.
Any ideas what might be wrong anyone?
