Note: we are several to have this error after having cleared the
server/default/data folder (ie the repository).
This is probably related to the Jackrabbit / Lucene upgrade:

Jackrabbit 1.2.1 works only with Lucene 2.0 so there must be removed any
trace of jackrabbit 1.1 and lucene 1.4.
It works in my case, but there are cases where we couldn't find an
explanation for this even with correct versions
mentioned above. Still digging.
If someone finds why this is happening, please tell.
