Even when I specifiy a dialect
org.apache.lucene.store.jdbc.dialect.MySQLMyISAMDialect I get exceptions.

did you try specifying org.apache.lucene.store.jbdc.dialect.MySQLDialect
(MySQLLinnoDialect and MySQLMylSAMDialect are also available if needed) ?
That would tell us whether the error is in Compass' auto-detection or in
the dialect itself
