this is just a guess, but i would imagine that the web has a pointer to
the ftp site.

and yes, i would also imagine the discourses here are digested.  i believe
it is an option to receive the digest instead of the individual messages
(helps those who have to pay for each message...altho doesn't help
much with bandwidth, i suppose).

i, for instance, first found out about ecofem list through seeing a digest
when doing a gopher search.

i would imagine this would have been in any type of intro file, and is
a rather common thing with listservs.
