Subject: Dealing with feminine products
Consumer waste from using "feminine products" has alsways kind of
bothered me; then I read an article in Ms. magazine about the toxic
dyoxins (sp?) they use to bleach the cotton so it looks "natural" and
"clean"--stuff that is prohibited by law in the use of diaper making,
but not for sticking up our vaginas! Great! Also the whole thing about
how they don't just suck up the menstral flow, but also important
buggies and so on. So last year I switched to using flannel pads that
are washable and reusable. They are made by two women down in Texas,
who call their company "Moonflower Pads"--they are very
feminine-positive. The patterns on the pads are cute, and they don't
slip around at all. I sound like an advertisement, eh? I'm just
really enthusiastic about it. It takes the profits out of these big
companies and puts them back into businesses that are ecologically
aware. You can also use the rinse water to water your plants! They
love the minerals....My mom thinks this whole process is so disgusting
and going back to grandmother's time, but it has gotten me much more in
touch with my body & much more respectful of its processes & I actually
look forward to the whole thing now--it's like a meditation that
reconnects me to my body and the earth.
