Dioxins are produced when chlorine is bonded to organic chemicals in the bleaching process. In paper bleaching this occurs at very high temperatures (at least 500 degrees, from what I recall), and is a by-product of the bleaching process. If there is residual dioxin from the process in the products, I am not sure of that. And I am really unsure that the tampons actually have dioxin "in them," just as I am unsure whether you can get dioxins from eating bleached paper (bleah!) or drinking coffee from a bleached paper cup, I know that the waste products of the bleaching process (those dioxins) are however absorbed and concentrated in the food chain, Native Americans probably have some of the highest concentrations, because many of them depend on fresh fish from rivers and streams that have high concentrations of dioxins and other dibenzo-furans, due to the fact that paper bleaching mills are on many of the primary rivers....the Penobscot nation is one such nation that is facing this.... So even if we aren't getting dioxins in our systems by these other methods, the question is do we want to contribute in some ways through our purchasing to the poisoning of indigenous peoples and those other (for the most part) minority groups, since they are the most at risk population. When I worked at EDF, the point was made that this is the most blatant example of environmental racism that we have yet to see, because at the time the EPA restrictions regarding dioxins were based on the average white middle class fish consumption which was about one fresh fish meal a month (also based on 1973 information), and did not take into account those minority groups which depend on fresh water fish to maintain their protein needs. Now, of course the evidence is that ANY amount of dioxin is hazardous to our health, and because everyone has blood concentrations of dioxin that are already too high, any additional is just too much. (Evidently 4 ppq causes spermatogenesis and egg mortality in Eastern Cormorants and other kinds of animals....to get an idea of the abount that is, it's about equal to 1 second in 32 million years, and blood concentrations in most of the human population is in the parts per million, not quadrillion). The EPA has since updated it's regs on this, and is now recognizing that any amount of dioxin is too much, but it's taken a good 20 years for them to finally accept this. No one really knows how much damage has been done. Considering that we are seeing a dramatic decrease in fertility in men, it seems to indicate that the dioxins ARE having an effect. (Dioxins may also be related in some strange way to breast cancer, which actually can prevent it from happening, but other cancers are more likely to occur, as well as birth defects). My question about the tampax, is do they actually use the same high temperatures? Or do they soak them in bleach to whiten and sterilize them? Cotton, for the most part is already white.
