AnneD One problem I identify immediately, is that if you believe
one of the roots (or was it the root) cause of eviro degradation
is a lack of spirituality or that one of the "fixes" for our ills
is a transformation of our spiritual selves I start to get images
of being "saved". I personally, for a variety of reasons, do not
relate to the writings/teachings of Starhawk and other spiritual
teachings in general. So where does it leave someone like me, is
a conversion necessary for the eventual societal conversion?
As an economist, I believe what drives us to behaviours which are
ultimately environmentally destructive, is everybody trying to
satisfy their wants/desires etc... which is what a market system
encourages. Where we probably agree is that I do believe people
can find pleasure and fulfillment in non-consumptive activities
(spiritual practices, good deeds, communing with nature and other
people) but we are not as a society encouraged or taught to do
so.
