Hi to Tammy and Anne!
I was beginning to wonder the same thing about the lack of postings lately
and the negative tangent this group has been taking. I subscribed to this
list because I have no one in my area to talk about environmental
issues/feminism with. Where I live, environmentalists are seen as the
"arch-enemy" of the farmers. The funny thing is, some of the farmers voice
the same ideas that the environmentalists do!
For example, my father-in-law was talking about sustainable agriculture the
other day -- only he didn't realize it. He said that the farmers were taking
too much from the land by planting the same crops over and over again, then
using fertilizer to try to replace what they were taking out. He said they
should plant "green" fertilizer in the winter and plow it under in the spring
-- providing a cover to stop soil erosion and adding nitrogen back to the
soil.
I read Susan Griffin's book "Woman and Nature" for a grad class I am taking
and was intrigued by her analysis that our problems with nature began when
prehistoric society became locked to a farming way of life. Instead of
thanking nature for what she gives us, man began to think that he was the
miracle because he planted the seed and plowed the fields. And when he took
too much, he did not blame himself -- rather he foisted it off onto nature.
If anyone would like to continue this conversation, please do. I am
interested in sustainable ag and sustainable development and bioregionalism
and how women play a part in these "philosophies.":-)
Plus, could someone please explain to me the significance of using Womyn as
opposed to woman? I have seen it around, but have never seen a reason for
using it!
Thanks-- Mary
P.S. I will be out of town until Thursday, so if I am slow to respond to
this conversation, that's why. Off to a grad seminar!;-)
