You speaketh the truth! If we could put forth an "ad campaign"
convincing the American public that "weeds are in!" this would work!
I have OFTEN thought of the HUMONGOUS (another word for you, Mary)
crabgrass "flowerlets" that grow here seem to be *perfect* in every
way! No brown spots, no chewed on leaves (no bugs HERE like them...),
don't need fertilizing, etc., etc. Should be IDEAL. And, evidently,
they will grow and GROW and G R O W ! I let one go once just to see
how big it would get - it started to shoot UPWARD after it spread
outward as far as it could. A "perfect specimen!" (ha)
The bad news is - you're absolutely right - the absolutely miserable
allergy problems most of them cause. However, various grasses also
cause allergies! (No way to win in the allergy area...) The one
weed I really HATE the most is what we call "nut grass" (don't have a
CLUE what the real name is). At first, it masquerades as your
regular grass - but grows much faster & then "blooms" out in a most
UNattractive sprouty way; PLUS it takes over the surrounding grass
roots and chokes them out. If these go too long - it also has a very
deep root that is near impossible to pull out!
I do love the flowering ones, though - even like the dandelions!
