Weeds provide valuable habitat, erosion control, etc. However,
some also cause hay fever, etc., and exotic weeds can disrupt an
ecosystem (e.g., melaleuca and brazillian pepper in South Florida).
I once did a paper on "noxious weeds" for an ecology class. One of
the most befuddling projects I ever worked on. (The high point was
a trip to Wooster, Ohio, where I was greeted as the "weed man from
Cleveland." How embarrasing!)
Personally, I prefer weeds to lawns. They're much more interesting
than grass, habitat for critters, easier to take care of, and we'd
use less gasoline and pesticides.
