Subject: Dumping waste on a mountain
Date: Mon, 18 Dec 95 14:14:00 GMT
Encoding: 36 TEXT

I am looking for information on the effect that placing a dump on a small
mountain will have on the water systems in the area, the wildlife and any
other environmental issues that may be affected. I particularly require
well researched facts into similar situations and would be grateful if
anyone could point me in the direction of such information. It would be
invaluable in our campaign to stop the dump.

The Background
I live in the Mid-west of Ireland in a very scenic area , 500 feet up the
side of a small mountain. It is proposed that a dump taking waste material
from several counties in Ireland including some with considerable industrial
activity will be placed just above my house on the edge of a small river
which in turn feeds into a larger river called the Mulcair which in turn
feeds into the Shannon river. Both the Mulcair and Shannon are trout and
salmon rivers and I have seen an otter in the Shannon.

I am not 100% sure of the geology of the area but it would appear to be
blanket bog on sandstone over Carboniferous limestone. We actually draw our
drinking water from the limestone at a depth of 160 feet. This area is also
the watershed for a series of small rivers all of which eventually run into
the Shannon.

We need facts as speculation as what effect waste will have on ther water
systems and wildlife are not enough.

I would appreciate help in obtaining this information if anyone has access
these sort of facts.

Please respond to

This is a reply to sarah who needs information about waste dumps, water and
wildlife

while i do not have the data myself and while i have only a few rough details
about your situation, i think that i could point you to houston, texas, usa

several years ago (1990) a corporation, hunter industrial facilities, inc
(hifi) had plans to build and operate a dump in the flood plain of houston
lake (the drinking water source for houston and surrounding areas)...they
intended to use above ground storage as well as salt-domes for wate
injection...this caused great controversy...while salt-domes had been used
for petroleum storage (with limited "success"), their use in this kind of
waste disposal was new...no law to ban it...no law to allow it...an
interesting debate ensued....if the data from this would be of help to you, i
suggest contacting clean water action in houston texas...unfortunately i do
not seem to have their address or phone handy, but if you would like it i
could find it for you.

hello

i have been monitoring this list for a short while....i am on several mailing
lists and they appear to work a bit differently...they are high volume and
are a bit more "chatty"...please direct me as to whether responses to
inquiries are to be made via the list or in private....

while i am here, i might as well introduce myself...i am a 27 y/o white
female in the united states...i am currently finishing my masters of divinity
degree at vanderbilt university in nashville tennessee, usa...my program
focus has been on healing and i have utilized ethics, feminist literary
theory, poststructuralism, ecofeminism, queer theory and biblical studies to
explore the healing process...i am currently writing about united methodist
theology and the united methodist hospital system...i have plans to be
ordained and have been recommended by my district for ordination...i was more
than excited to see this list and look forward to participating in
interesting dialogue.

Although much in favor of looking after our environment, I don't really
agree with the vegetable bit. There are few things as satisfying in life as
a good pepper steak. What would Christmas be without turkey, or the ham?
