Well, it looks like we can all be together again. I wondered if I had been
booted for some reason. I look forward to reading the posts, following the
threads, and receiving information about conferences, papers and the like.
 Let's get to it!!

Subject: Suggestions please!

Hi folks,

I am going to Cuba in June to speak on do a paper on organic agriculture and
ecofeminism/marxist development theory <a joint paper> there. While there I
hope to interview some folks about the organization of labor, gender
hierarchies, etc. The people running the country have suggested as
appropriate gifts: soap, toothpaste, makeup and disposable razors <also
books, which would be fine except that they are heavy>. Now, it seems to me
that as an ecofeminist giving women disposable razors and makeup would be
absurd! On the other hand, soap and toothpaste send a definite message when
given immediately before or after an interview, and I can't imagine that that
message wouldn't cross cultural barriers. Does anyone have suggestions for
appropriate gifts?

Many Thanks,
Louisa

HI,

On one hand I agree that those choices are a bit contradictory to the
nature of your studies. On the other hand when women want razors and
make-up, it is just as appropriate to bring them razors and makeup as
it would be inappropriate to bring them to someone who finds them to be
disgusting tools of bodily disfiguration (I cough here because I sometimes
use both).

Why not bring them magazines or small sample sizes of toothpaste, lip
balm, sun block, soap and shampoo (with a mixture of little items it
might take the edge off of handing someone toiletries)

Hope this helps and good luck in Cuba!

Louisa,

There is a shortage of medical supplies due to the embargo therefore soap
and toothpaste may not be such a bad idea. Also, maybe you could bring in
aspirin and other medicines. But I would research this situation and which
products could help ease this.
