Thanks for your suggestions. I just realized that I said "the people who run
the country" rather than "the people who run the conference" <who are
Americans, though they have visited before for this same conference>. Sorry!
Does anyone know if they have a shortage of electronic devices <e.g. handheld
calculators, watches, etc.>?

I don't have any suggestions re: appropriate gifts, but I am
interested in knowing more about the content of your paper ... maybe
you could summarise some of the points briefly for the list, and that
might help start some discussion following the recent break?

This is a reply to Louisa Moon. When I visited Cuba two years ago people
were very
happy to receive soap and shampoo as there was a shortage then. The US
embargo also meant that there was a shortage of electronic and computer
equipment, so perhaps cassettes, diskettes, batteries and film might be
useful to take. Is there any way you can find out directly from your hosts.
I would also be interested to hear more about your paper and what you
find out while you are there. Dorothy Kidd.

I understand your reservations about certain gifts, and you have gotten
some great suggestions here. Why not mix all of these items together in
a small basket, and then offer your hosts the opportunity to choose one
or two items from this basket. You are then respecting them and
providing them a choice which can only be seen as respectful and
compassionate. We have done this with migrant workers by holding a
fiesta and having these baskets around for people to choose their own items.

Best of luck
