Call For Participation
1997 Spring Women's Studies Conference
The annual New Mexico Women's Studies Conference, sponsored
by the
Women Studies Program and the Women's Resource Center at The
University of New Mexico, will be held March 7-8, 1997, in
Albuquerque. The Conference theme is "On the Edge of Time:
Women
Creating the Next Millennium." We view this as an ideal
opportunity to
celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Women Studies Program
and
Women's Resource Center at UNM and to foster discussion of
how the
next millennium will impact women's lives on personal,
cultural, and
global levels.
We are seeking participation from activists, artists,
faculty,
students, grass-roots organizers, performers, staff,
mothers, members
from business and social-service agencies, grrls, and
community
volunteers in order to generate dialogues about the issues
that affect
women's lives as we enter the next millennium. We invite
submissions
for all kinds of program formats--workshops, roundtable
discussions,
panels, creative performances--that engage the conference
theme. We
especially encourage programs that will be of interest to
multiple
audiences and which reflect the diversity of our various
communities.
Topics of particular interest, although not limited to the
following,
include the impact of the millennium on women:
aging...technology...health...environmental
racism...artists...sisterhood...indigenous peoples'
struggles and
victories...constructing identity--races, sexualities,
ethnicities,
genders...global factories...increasing global
fascism...capitalism in

I am doing a little research to prepare for a design project: costumes
for cry out woman, cry out earth by maia gay and friends. I would
like to include narratives into their surface design so that the
garments themselves (robes... mantles) will hold stories of hot spots,
anguish of women and earth. I am intruiged by several things: the
received message at Medjugorge (sp?) and the ensuing debacle in that
area. (a subtext here: I heard a folk belief about fountains under
the earth and springs and pure children which reminded me of lourdes
and makes the earth seem like a lactating mother responding...) by
the devastation of indigenous people's lands for dumping and nuclear
testing: I would like a story here about actual women in participatory
relationship to sacred space. maybe including plants... and
something about the loss of heirloom fruits and marginalizing a
remnant of goddess or gynecentric celebration which survived on an
outlying island and much later in history in fragments of Sappho's
performance verse. spin me a story.

Thanks for your kind words and encouragement. I surely will be trying to
connect with Canadian women! I hope to be able - with the help of our
growing body of members and supporters - to attract an increasing number
of voters in the next few elections.
