Hi! I am pleased to know that a book is going to be written on American Forestry from a feminist perspective. I am currently working on my thesiswhere I am empirically examining the consequences of deforestation in rural Bangladesh on women's lives and work. I spent six months in two villages in the plain forest area of Bangladesh.In recognition of the environmental degradation Bangladesh Government and a leading NGO(Proshika) are offering Social Forestry Programs in the degraded villages.Both Government and Proshika emphasizes the effective participation of women, at various levels. However, my findings onwomen's participation in social forestry points to some constraints. They can be summarized as: i) women are short of time,ii) poorly organized;iii)lack of money and land;iv)restricted access to political power;v) limited ability to influence the decision makers;vi)not allowed to travel and also women's participation is curtailed by the hierarchical structure in which the development schemes are designed and the way the programs are implemnted. I am a Ph.d student in the Dept. of Sociology, McGill University. If anyone has the similar findings from somewhere.. please write it would then give us chance to examine the problem globally.
