While I understand what you are saying Teresa, I don't think that restricting
this list, particularly this early in its existence is necessarily the best thing
to do. First, I don't think we should ever restrict it to "women and men who
want to be women" I feel that men have a lot to say about feminists, and that
men can be as much feminists as women (if not more so in some cases). I also
don't think it wise to restrict it to women who are already ecofeminists for
several reasons (1) again, excluding men is just not right, IMO (2) this is a
learning oriented place to share one's own knowledge and to listen to the ideas
and opinions of others. If we all already come from the same school of thought,
how are we going to learn and broaden our minds? (3) diversity is what makes up
the feminist movement, the environmental movement, any successful movement, IMO.
By excluding others, we are simply doing to them what has been done to us for
centuries.
Right now, everyone seems very excited to be a part of a new list. I think that
this will die down soon. I think that people who realize they don't "belong" to
this particular discussion group will sign off eventually. But to force them off
would be to censor them -something I am opposed to. If a person is extremely
unsensitive and downright rude and personally attacking members of the list, then
I think it's a consideration to ask them to leave, or even have the list owner
remove them - this has happened on other groups I'm on, but always as a last
resort. If the message load is too heavy, I suggest you set ecofem to digest, or
delete all subject headers that don't seem important to you.
Just my opinion though, what does that mean? :)
