ECOFEM members, This is to inform you of a new web site that provides excerpts and background information for the new book, Toxic Deception: How the Chemical Industry Manipulates Science, Bends the Law and Threatens Your Health. http://www.essential.org/cpi/studies/toxic/index.html In the New York Times on Feb. 17, columnist Bob Herbert called the book "the story of the triumph of a special interest over the public interest." While this book is not about women and the environment per se, I think any reader would be struck by how many of the struggles against toxics detailed in the book were spearheaded by women determined to protect their families: a family overcome by dry cleaning fumes in New York City, a family devastated by illnesses traced to formaldehyde fumes from the wood products in their home, a farm family wracked with disease because of the herbicides spilled on their land. Also, our book deals with some of the chemicals believed to have estrogenic effects that threaten reproductive health; my co-author, Dan Fagin of Newsday, has done some of the groundbreaking reporting on the possible links between these substances and breast cancer on Long Island.
